Which Kuycon monitor for which Mac?

MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, Mac Studio: each machine has its display limits, and they are not always the ones you would expect. Here is the matching table, with the special case of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

The case of the M5 Pro and M5 Max

This is the most important point of this guide in 2026, and it is counter-intuitive: on these two chips, high-refresh 5K is currently limited to 60 Hz. A MacBook Air M5, less powerful, nevertheless drives the same monitor at 165 Hz.

The cause is software: macOS 26 combined with the Thunderbolt 5 firmware restricts the GPU's DisplayPort output and prevents high-rate DSC compression. M4 and M5 machines on Thunderbolt 4 are not affected. The detail is in our dedicated article.

What that changes in practice: if you have just bought a MacBook Pro M5 Pro or M5 Max and you wanted smoothness, go for the P27ZB in 4K rather than a high-refresh 5K. If you want Retina density above all, the G27P at 75 Hz or the P27Z remain excellent choices: you simply will not use their maximum refresh rate for now.

The general rule on a Mac

macOS is designed around 218 ppi. It is the density at which the system applies exact 2× scaling, with no interpolation, and at which text is best drawn.

  • 27 inches: aim for 5K (5120 × 2880). A 4K at that diagonal drops to 163 ppi.
  • 32 inches: aim for 6K. The G32X is at exactly 218 ppi, the G32P at 223.
  • 34-inch ultrawide: no model reaches Retina density. You trade sharpness for width, knowingly.

One cable, on all these machines
