Matte or glossy? Reflections, contrast and visual comfort
This is the most underestimated choice at the moment of ordering, and one of the few that cannot be corrected afterwards. The right answer depends neither on the brand nor on the budget: it depends on your room and the position of your desk.
What each treatment actually does
The outer layer of a monitor has to manage a conflict: letting the panel's light out without letting the room's light in. Two approaches, two trade-offs.
A glossy anti-reflective coating stays smooth. It applies an optical treatment that reduces reflection without scattering light: colours come out saturated, blacks stay deep, the image has depth. In return, a light source placed behind you reflects clearly — a window, a lamp, a light-coloured shirt.
A matte has a micro-roughness that scatters incoming light in every direction. The reflection does not disappear: it spreads out and becomes a diffuse veil, far less bothersome than a sharp image of the window. The price to pay: that same roughness also scatters a little of the light emitted by the panel, which very slightly softens the rendering and imperceptibly lowers perceived contrast.
And the nano-textured glass?
This is the premium variant of matte, offered by Apple as a paid option: the diffusion is etched directly into the glass rather than applied as a layer. The result is very clean, with an even weaker veil than conventional matte. It is effective, and it is expensive. An ordinary matte panel achieves a comparable result for everyday use, at no extra cost.

Decide by looking at your desk
One question only: what is behind you when you are sitting down?
Choose glossy if…
- your desk is against a wall, or facing the window;
- the lighting is indirect, aimed at the ceiling;
- you mainly work in the evening or in controlled light;
- you retouch images and want maximum contrast;
- you put the monitor next to a MacBook, whose panel is glossy.
Choose matte if…
- there is a window behind you;
- the room has several light sources or ceiling spotlights;
- you work during the day in a very bright space;
- you share an open-plan desk with lighting you do not control;
- you read and write far more than you look at images.

Comfort is not only about the finish
Four factors weigh at least as much on eye strain, and three of them can be set for free.
Sustained brightness, not the peak
A comfortable monitor is one able to hold a stable brightness without straining. The models at 600 sustained nits — G27P, P27Z — stay legible in a bright room without being pushed to the maximum. Conversely, a monitor that has to run flat out all the time is more tiring. Set the brightness to match your room: a monitor noticeably brighter than its surroundings is the leading cause of fatigue.
Flicker
Some monitors set brightness by switching the backlight on and off very rapidly. That flicker is invisible but tiring for sensitive people, especially at low brightness. Continuous dimming avoids the phenomenon: if you have ever had headaches in front of a monitor without knowing why, that is a lead worth examining.
Position
The top of the monitor should be at eye level or slightly below, at a distance of about an outstretched arm. A monitor set too high dries out the eyes — you blink less when looking upwards. A height-adjustable stand or a desk arm solve the problem in a minute; see the stands and mounts guide.
Colour temperature
Reducing the blue component in the evening helps you fall asleep. macOS and Windows do it natively, but the DDC/CI protocol lets you act on the monitor itself rather than on the image sent: the rendering stays more accurate. The tools are listed on the brightness control.
Cleaning without damaging
A dry microfibre cloth is enough nine times out of ten. If a mark resists, dampen the cloth very slightly with water — never the screen directly, and never glass cleaner, alcohol or kitchen towel, which attack surface treatments. Matte panels are more sensitive than glossy ones: rubbing hard can permanently mark the micro-roughness.

Does matte really degrade the image?
Very slightly. The micro-roughness that scatters reflections also scatters a little of the light emitted by the panel, which imperceptibly softens the rendering and lowers perceived contrast. Facing a window, that trade-off remains largely worthwhile.
Does glossy anti-reflective remove reflections?
It reduces them markedly compared with bare glass, but it does not erase them: a light source placed behind you will remain visible. It does, however, preserve contrast and saturation better than a matte panel.
Is nano-textured glass worth the premium?
In a very bright room and for professional image work, it does the job with a weaker veil than conventional matte. For everyday use, an ordinary matte panel offers a comparable result at no extra cost.
Which finish to put the monitor next to a MacBook?
Glossy anti-reflective: a MacBook's panel is glossy, and a matte monitor beside it will look slightly less saturated. If you work with the lid closed most of the time, the question no longer arises.
